Bringing together diverse stakeholders in the forest sector, the XV World Forestry Congress presents the opportunity of exchanging experiences, learning and capacity building. As part of the many capacity-building activities, the International Forestry Students’ Association (IFSA) will be organizing two WFC pre-congress side events titled:

  1. Social Forest Entrepreneurship Training: Introduction to Nature Based Solutions organized in collaboration with the IFSA-IUFRO Joint Task Force on Forestry Education on Sunday, 1 May 2022, 10:00 am – 13:00 pm
  1. Fellowship application/proposal writing workshop organized in partnership with the International Society of Tropical Foresters (ISTF) on Sunday, 1 May 2022, 14:00 am – 17:00 pm

The Social Forest Entrepreneurship Training workshop has an objective to introduce present and future forestry professionals to the concept of social entrepreneurship as a major contributing factor to building a greener and resilient future.  According to the recent Global Study on Forest Education 2021, the socioeconomic content of forestry is insufficiently covered in the curricula of technical, vocational, and university forest programs.  Therefore, there is a need to find ways to provide to students and current graduates information associated with the social and economic sciences of forests

The format of the side event will be a workshop with presentation and group practice, moderated by Sandra Rodriguez and facilitated by José Carlos Martínez Hernández and Jessica Peña Torres

The Fellowship Application/Proposal Writing workshop aims to equip workshop participants with resources for fellowship and project funding, templates for a proposal and a fellowship application, and some practice with developing a proposal/fellowship application. Most students and young scientists in forest-related disciplines need more experience in preparing proposals to get funding to help with their education and research, and for their future professional life. To ensure the future of forest science in terms of funding, this fellowship writing workshop designed specifically for forestry students and young professionals will help young forest researchers and other innovators further the field of forest science and encourage the development of new products in the forest sector.

The format of the side event will be a workshop with presentation and practice moderated by Sheila Ward and with Maria Paula Sarigumba and Patrick Durst as keynote speakers.
